What's the difference between casters and wheels?

What is a wheel?
Wheels are round objects designed to roll when a force is applied. They are classified as simple machines along with levers, wedges, shafts and pulleys. Of course, wheels have been around for a long time. While it's unclear when the wheel was invented, historians have found evidence dating back to 4500 B.C. Wheels are available in different materials. Some of them are made of rubber, while others are made of polyurethane (PU).
We are all familiar with the wheel. It is a round object with a hole in the center that can be used as an axle, allowing it to be used for any purpose you need. Best suited for use on carpet, hardwood or tile floors. Casters can be anything. One can also define it as a cylinder of greater or lesser width that rotates on an axis, like a wheel on a car. Wheels are used for many mechanical purposes.

What are casters?
Casters, on the other hand, are wheeled rolling devices designed to be used with other objects. You can find them on industrial machines, office chairs, grocery carts, hand carts, and more. Casters usually consist of wheels within a metal frame. They are installed using fasteners that connect the frame to a given object. All casters have a wheel. The wheels are placed within a metal frame and are capable of rolling when stressed.

Casters do include wheels. But it's more than just a wheel. It is an assembly containing a wheel and a bracket, sometimes called a "fork" or "yoke," and it is the bracket containing the wheel that distinguishes it from regular wheels. So when you want to replace the "wheels" on the bottom of a chair or stroller, you are actually looking to replace the caster assembly. So be sure to type "casters" into your search engine, or if you're going to a store, ask the salesperson for casters, not wheels. You will save a lot of time.

Casters are attached to a fixture or equipment to make the fixture moveable. You'll find casters available in two different styles:

1. The type that has a flat bracket with mounting holes so that you can fix another flat surface flush with it - plate mounting,
2. Or the type without a flat surface that can be threaded or otherwise locked into a connected object via a threaded pivot or spring retaining clip - rod mount.

Some of the most common caster types include:

●rigid casters
●swivel casters
●Medical casters
●Leveling casters
●Carousel
●Industrial casters

The difference between wheels and casters:
Wheels and casters are not the same. Wheels are more basic than casters. As mentioned before, they consist of round objects that are capable of rolling when force is applied to them. Casters are more complicated. They also have a wheel, but the casters have a metal frame that allows them to be used in conjunction with another object.

There are also more types of casters than traditional wheels because they contain a metal frame. For example, there are swivel casters, which live up to their name by supporting rotational movement. They don't just scroll back and forth. In contrast, swivel casters can swivel from side to side.

Casters are easier to install than wheels. You can't just screw or otherwise attach a wheel to an object. Instead, you need to use a frame, which is where casters come into play. All casters have a frame (usually made of stainless steel or aluminum) within which the wheels are mounted. With this metal frame you can easily install them on objects.
